Long before its reputation as the premier dining destination among the Hawaiian islands, CanoeHouse stood as a canoe storage site where Duke Kahanamoku and Babe Ruth sought respite in the idyllic beaches surrounding the soon-to-be restaurant. After opening its doors in 1989, this beloved institution has since become a gathering place for generations of friends, families and neighbors. Helmed by Executive Chef Mark Libunao, CanoeHouse features thoughtful, seasonal dishes that celebrate Hawaii’s landscape as well as its farmers and purveyors.

  • Signature oceanfront restaurant with Japanese-inspired dishes

  • Open nightly from 5-10PM

  • Advanced reservations recommended

  • For outside guests, CanoeHouse accepts reservations up to 30 days prior to the reservation date

About Chef Mark Libunao

From his family’s kitchen in Kaʻū, Hawai’i to Mauna Lani’s storied oceanfront restaurant, Chef Mark Libunao chases originality. Following tenures at Norwegian Cruise Line and Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas, Chef Mark accepted a Sous Chef position at CanoeHouse, where he supported the operation throughout the pandemic and the re-opening of Mauna Lani in March of 2021. After a year, Mark was promoted to Chef de Cuisine at HāLani, where he reimagined the alfresco eatery’s breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. It wasn’t long before CanoeHouse tapped Chef Mark again, this time as the Executive Chef of the storied restaurant. Inspired by the styles and techniques he has gathered over the past decade, Chef Mark looks forward to diversifying CanoeHouse’s menu while continuing its legacy, sprinkling his unique touch on the dishes Hawai’i has come to love.
